Wearing the A6's updated sheetmetal, the RS6 includes extra visual upgrades such as flared fenders, a honeycomb design for its signature, single frame grille, bolder side skirts, a rear diffuser, rear spoiler, and larger lower air intakes to cool its massive, 15.3-in. front brakes. New 19-in. standard forged aluminum wheels are also complimented by low-profile 255/40ZR-19 tires, and the standard hood is swapped for one made of aluminum to reduce weight.
Of course people don't buy the RS6 for its looks -- to make sure it keeps up with its rivals, Audi has added a host of performance modifications starting with a 5.2L, FSI twin-turbo V-10 with direct injection, which puts out a whopping 580-hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. This being an Audi, that monster power reaches the pavement via a Quattro all-wheel drive system, and is channeled through a revised Tiptronic six-speed transmission with paddle shifters. A new suspension includes many aluminum components, and the automaker's Dynamic Ride Control system reduces pitch and roll electronically. In addition those who really want to test the RS6's limits can add 20-in. wheels, humongous 16.5-in. ceramic brakes, and request an ECU reflash that raises its top speed to 174 mph (from a limited 155 mph).
Inside the RS6 also includes a liberal helping of sport and luxury amenities, including highly-bolstered Recaro bucket seats, a mix of aluminum, leather, alcantara, and carbon fiber trim, as well as options like dynamic cruise control, a Bose stereo, and the latest take on Audi's MMI infotainment system. If this supercar-slaying family hauler sounds good to you, however, you may have to wait -- while the RS6 will reach Germany in October 2008, a date for U.S. sales hasn't been set.
